Tongue Cleaner: Why You Need It

Tongue Cleaner

Plaque collects everywhere in the mouth with the tongue being no exception. Certain foods (coffee, wine) , medications (antibiotics, dry mouth) habits (smoking), environment conditions (dry mouth), yeast infection (candidiasis) and poor oral hygiene can promote coating of the tongue. If the plaque and bacteria stay on the tongue it can instigate bad breath or halitosis. Cleaning the tongue removes bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins and dead cells on the surface of the tongue.
A tongue cleaner is exactly that—a tool that cleans the tongue. They too, come in a array of options. Some are plastic, some have a metal scraper, some have one handle and some have a two handle system. They all do well, so again it’s preference.

Using the tongue cleaner

  • Place the part with grooves as far back on the tongue as you can tolerate
  • Push down on the tongue and move out towards the tongue tip while keeping the tool on the tongue—your scraping the tongue
  • Repeat as many times as necessary until coating or staining is gone
  • Be careful not to push too hard, it can make the tongue feel raw or bleed
